ANNOUNCEMENT: An announcement

FYI.

Wow.  I like starting posts with FYI.  I mean, was that powerful or what?!?

So here's my FYI... I know this is two giveaways right smack dab in the middle.  But I'm not doing any giveaways in October so it makes up for it.  In fact, in October I am participating in "No Sponsor October" which is something I just made up myself right this second.  It basically means I want to take my blog back to the basics this next month and focus on just writing.  I am exhausted with the high demands of my job and my blog so I'm going to just take a bit of a step for October, let the blog be just writing like it was in the good old days, and let you folk enjoy some commercial free programming.  Or something.  My sponsorship program will be up and running again in November, good as always- I just needed to break for a bit so that is what you will get in October.

That being said I will still be doing sidebar ads.  Just sidebar ads.  No giveaways no twitter shout outs no guest posts, just a button on the side that clicks through to your bloggy blog.  Sidebar ads are $7 for a 200 x 200 ad for the entire month.  I'm averaging 75,000 pageviews a month because I know you want to know that before you fork over $7.  I don't blame you.  I'd wanna know too.  If you are interested in the seven dollar special email me at thelifeofbon@gmail.com and we'll get it set up for you.  Other than that, enter this awesome giveaway ($75 to Sephora, two books, and $30 to Barnes and Noble just to name a few prizes.  It's a pretty smary girl's dream!) and get ready for a few weeks of all Bon all the time on the blog!

You can never have too much stuff!

The first of 180 school days is over, I'm exhausted, and Greg has promised to go to the water park with me this afternoon so this post will be quick.  You see, I'm pretty dead set on hitting up the water park because I have this theory that if I continue to do summer time activities after school (water park, tennis, camp fires, sleeping out on the tramp) then summer won't be over, regardless of how I spend my hours from 7-3:00.

I know you all want to know how the first day because you're sweet and thoughtful like that.  I'll give you the full run down for tomorrow, but for right now I will tell you:

1.  It is hot.  Starting school in 100 degree weather with a school of over 2,000 students doesn't make for cool classrooms, that's for sure.  The A/C is running full blast and the rooms are still hot hot hot.  In a way we all kind of united in our hotness.  Now there's something for you to chew on.

2.  My review of my students thus far is this:  they're kind of naughty.  I know naughty is a word you use for three year olds, but it's the best word I can think of to describe them.  They're not delinquents or total rebels or anything like that.  Just kind of naughty.  I couldn't believe the yappers they all had on them, especially for the first day.  Usually kids are quiet and uncomfortable and don't know anyone yet on the first day.  I usually don't have to lay down the law until about October when they start to test me.  I have a feeling this year I will be laying that law much, much sooner.

Oh- before I forget to mention, Amber Willmon was the winner of the $1,000 back to school giveaway.  Of course, I am stoked out of my mind for her.  Who wouldn't love winning $1,000?!?

And what the hey, since that giveaway is over, let's get another one going for you gals, shall we?  My fabulous sponsors this month are giving away tons of amazing prizes.  I hope you win!  Enter at the bottom of the post!

Orientations: Killing the Human spirit since the dawn of time.

Well folks.  I'm back from my first day of orientation at my new school district and it is safe to say that orientations are the biggest hoax ever invented.  I mean, who here has ever learned one single thing at an orientation?  I went for five hours and the only thing useful that happened was I found out what my school email will be.  There was also motivational clips about how children are our future, a bunch of people I will never meet again telling me "their story" about why they chose to be teachers, (duh! Summers off!) and how we can't let kids be the missing link in our puzzle of life?  I know, I didn't get it either.  The only great thing that happened was I won a dollar from the credit union.  Five hours for one dollar... freak, ya'll I'm making twenty cents an hour now!  Welcome to the big time!

Today I've got some lovely bloggers strutting their stuff for you.  This month's group of bloggers is one of the most diverse I've ever had.  We've got travel blogs, fashion blogs, women power blogs, EVERYTHING!  I hope you find a few you like because these girls are really terrific.  Skim through and click over to a few (or ALL!) , I've included a few of my favorite posts on each of their blogs.  Happy Monday chicas!

P.S.  Tomorrow is the last chance to enter this giveaway.
P.P.S.  I absolutely loved the comments on yesterday's post.  Y'all are amazing.  And no, I'm not from the South. Ok thanks.

LIVING IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE

Don't read Amanda's blog unless you are ready for a case of serious travel envy.  She lives abroad so most of her posts are dedicated to traveling on a dime and fitting 9 days' worth of clothes into one backpack.  She's basically a miracle worker.  Her pictures will make you want to travel the world a hundred times over.  I love to travel and try hard to get one good vacation in a year... in the meantime, it is blogs like Amanda's that fill my wanderlust craving.  I especially loved her post about why she is the worst traveler ever, and her satire on how to be a tourist in Asia had me laughing out loud.

Stephanie doesn't call her blog "Behind the Camera" for nothing.  The moment you click on Stephanie's blog you will notice how beautiful her pictures are.  I'm a terrible enough photographer to notice a terrific one when I see one.  My heart melted when I saw this post about little boys taking a bath on the patio- it made me want to have kids right this second just so I can bathe them outside.  I also loved her review of one of my favorite books I read this year, The Happiness Project.  Oh, and Stephanie's blog design is seriously gorgeous.  Who are you guys all getting to design your blogs?!?  I swear, they get prettier and prettier.

Akirah's blog is totally unique and so beautiful.  She subtitles it "Believing in Women and our Brave Hearts."  In her "About" section Akirah states that she was in an abusive relationship for four years until she realized that her "heart was brave."  I love this and I love the sense of love and empowerment that comes from her blog.  She is unafraid to talk about tough issues and stand up for women.  Some of my favorite posts are The Number One Rule on Dating (It's not what you think) and How to Talk to your Friend about her Not Awesome Relationship.  This is the type of blog I could read for hours as the writing is quality and the content is fascinating and motivating.

I love Whitney's blog because she is one of those people who is not afraid to say what is on her mind and say it proud.  I have a feeling that if we were friends I would take her everywhere just to tell people off for me.  She's sassy and blunt and makes no apologies.  I couldn't help but laugh at her post about "How to Properly Judge: A Hater's Guide"- basically about how to decide if you are going to stop reading a blog.  On a more serious note, she talks about the difficulties of moving on from a relationship and healing in this post.  Whitney, you can come hang out with me anytime- I have a feeling we'd do just fine together!

Jenn is one of the most sincere and heartfelt bloggers out there.  She lays it all on the table, not trying to cover up anything.  She is also extremely generous with her readers- she does constant giveaways out of her own pocket.  When I asked her why she does this, she replied she wants to do something good and she knows how much she loves opening something up in the mail, so she sends something in the mail to others.  I don't think many bloggers as this sincere in their giveaways!  (This giveaway has low entries so far so make sure to enter!)  My most recent fave of hers is her post on numbers and how certain numbers evoke certain memories and emotions.  Her writing is honest and witty.

MY SWEET NOMSA

Ashlee creates jewelry and hair accessories for a living.  I am seriously coveting some of her earrings- she is so creative with her art.  (Shop found here.)  I'm not creative at all, so I love visiting blogs of creative, smart people like Ashlee.  She also does a lot of knitting and she posts her finished projects on her blog- I would kill for one of the beanies that she makes.  I loved this "Currently" post- it has totally motivated me to get my butt in gear.

P.S. MY NAME IS MADELINE

I feel like Madeline's blog is a representation of blogging in its purest form.  There are no tutorials, no giveaways, no free clothing, just her writing and being honest with herself and her readers.  Reading her blog is almost like picking up the journal of a total stranger and realizing two pages in, "Hey!  I really like this girl!".  I found myself totally immersed in her post about her trip to England and I loved this post where she just rambles but still manages to be totally entertaining.

THE WILDFLOWER WAY

Lesleigh has got a little bit of everything in her blog.  From hair product reviews to snazzing up a fancy dress to contemplations on what it means to have a soul mate, she's got it all.  I found myself very engaged in her post about what it means to be a woman.  The word obviously is very weighted, and I loved Lesleigh's take on it.  She doesn't post every day, but when she does it is always something worth reading and she'll definitely make your mind start ticking.

If you accept sponsors on your blog: The customer is always right?

About a year ago I wrote this post on sponsoring blogs.  I had been sponsoring for about six months and I had figured out a thing or two.  Now, with another year of sponsoring under my belt I have learned even more.  Unfortunately, a lot that I have learned about how to be a good blog to sponsor I have learned through negative experiences sponsoring other blogs.  I figure now would be a good time to share it with y'all so that A. it doesn't happen to you and B. you yourself don't do these things.  Ready?

A GOOD BLOG TO SPONSOR DOES THE FOLLOWING:

1.  A good blog to sponsor treats their blog like a business.  This means if they say they are going to post five times a week, they have to post five times a week.  If they tell you a post is going up on a certain day, it needs to go up on that day.  If there are changes, they need to let sponsors know.  I map out the beginning of my month all my sponsored post.  I know what days are the guest posts, what days are the giveaways and what days are the group posts.  Then I email all my sponsors and let them know.  If I have to make changes to the calendar, I email all sponsors before the change happens.  It's a business and the people sponsoring my blogs are my customers.

2. A good blog to sponsor offers refunds.  Some may disagree with me on this one and I'm interested to hear what you think.  If you are extremely disappointed with a blog sponsorship would you ask for a refund?  What if you weren't given everything in the package that you were promised?  If your button wasn't put up on time, if the post wasn't put up the day it was promised, if you felt you had been lied to about numbers?  What constitutes for asking for a refund?

To me, asking for a refund is nothing.  I take lots of things back to the store.  The watermelon wasn't ripe, the toy broke after two days, the hemline on the skirt was shoddy.  Take it back!  Exchange it.  If the whole store is pot, just get my money back and be done with it! I think this should be the same with sponsorships.  If you are going to offer ad space and accept money for it on your blog, than you need to accept responsibility if people are unhappy and be accountable when you mess up.

Out of the 30+ blogs I have sponsored, there have been two times when I have asked for a refund.  One time I felt that I was purposely lied to about the numbers.  The day my guest post went up I got 26 hits from that blog even though I had been told that the blogger's traffic was up to 100,000 pageviews a month.  I felt that the blogger had been dishonest about pageviews so I asked for a 50% refund.  She said no. I dropped it.

Another time the giveaway I was participating in didn't go up the day the blogged had said.  I was counting on the giveaway for traffic and posted something special that day to catch new traffic.  The post didn't go up and no word from the blogger.  A few days later, when I had a guest post on my blog, the giveaway randomly went up.  I felt that I couldn't take full advantage of the giveaway because I didn't know the day it went up.  In addition to this, traffic from the blogger's site was extremely low as the blogger didn't post as frequently as normal because it was a very busy that month and there were many stressful things going on with her family.  While I certainly am sympathetic to the situation, I didn't believe I should have to pay full price if she wasn't able to give the sponsorship her full attention.  I told her my concerns and asked for a 50% refund.  She complied, but followed it up with a rude email saying that I had walked all over her.

Both experiences with these bloggers bothered me a bit.  They both replied to me that low traffic was not their fault, and that I take a "risk" when I sponsor a blog and basically I need to deal with the consequences.  While I certainly agree that what traffic comes to my site isn't completely their responsibility, they have made it partly their responsibility by accepting my money.  The blog is now a business, and part of that should be keeping me happy, right?

I suppose this is where I have a bit of a problem doing business with bloggers and small business owners (i.e. Etsy).  You ask for a refund and the way they react you'd think you threatened to kill their whole family.  They can get so defensive and mean.  I feel like yelling to them, "Hey!  It's not that big of a deal, girl.  I still like you!  It's just you sold me a product, I was not satisfied with the product, and now I would like some of the money back that I gave you.  No biggie!"  Businesses understand this.  Wal-mart certainly doesn't get all up in arms when I take back their pants that don't fit.  Neither should a blogger.

I have had a handful of times when sponsors have told me they weren't happy with sponsorship.  In July, I completely spaced putting Jenn's name down as my feature sponsor.  Consequently, I didn't put her ad up.  Halfway into the month she asked me where her sidebar ad was.  When I realized what I had done, I apologized and said I would put it right up.  She said she wanted a refund and I should take better care of her money. I agreed and said I would be happy to give her 100% refund or two months of free ad space, whichever she preferred.  She was much kinder to me in the next email, we worked out a compromise that made us both happy, and we are on great "blogging terms" now.  Anytime a sponsor has complained to me I have offered a refund or free ads.  To me that's just good business.  No need to get offended or defensive, just admit wrong and try to fix the situation.

This month I had one of the best sponsoring experiences with Heather from Just Love.ly.  She has a huge readership, but I wasn't getting views from her site.  She told me straight up how many people were clicking over to my blog versus how many people normally click over on the blogs.  My number was very low.  She explained to me that she didn't think our styles match up. She focuses on DIY and beautiful homes and recipes.  I focus mainly on making fun of seventeen year old hoodlums.  We didn't match.

I was floored when she apologized for the traffic and told me she would offer me a 75% refund.  I didn't even ask her, she just offered it.  To me, this is excellent business.  Not only was I happy, but now I am eager to recommend her blog to others and will certainly recommend sponsoring her to those who have similar blogs to hers.  This is a woman you want to do business with.

3.  A good blog to sponsor tells you their monthly pageviews.  When it all comes down to it, this is the only number that matters.  Twitter followers, GFC followers, Bloglovin, etc is all useful only in that it should contribute to your monthly pageviews.  Some tell you their pageviews right out on their sponsor page,  but some don't.  If they don't, I ask them straight up.  You'd be surprised how many bloggers have 4,000+ GFC followers but aren't even getting 20,000 monthly pageviews. The big giveaways that took over our blogosphere there for a minute greatly inflated "follower" numbers and quite frankly, now they can't be trusted.  Ask monthly pageviews to really get a good idea of how many eyes will see your post.

4.  A good blog to sponsor tells you the day your post is going to go up.  As soon as I have paid my money, I want to know what date the guest post or giveaway will be.  I have had sponsors tell me before just to send the post and then they'll fit it in whenever works for them.  Nope.  Give me a date and I will send the post before the deadline.  I like to know when the post will go up and know that that day has been set aside for me.

5.  A good blog to sponsor is not shady.  I suppose this could go a lot of different ways.  I get that the term "shady" is totally vague, but I can't think of a better word.  Just be upfront.  Don't lie.  Return emails on time.  Explain exactly what a sponsor is getting.  If you say "social media love" then what does that mean?  Do you #ff them with a group of a bunch of other bloggers?  Or do you link to a specific post of theirs three times a month?  Because those are very different things.  I feel like with sponsorship, the vaguer a blogger is, the shadier a blogger is.  What time will the post go up?  Don't post a guest post at 3 in the afternoon.  Post it early in the morning.  I was pretty frustrated this spring when I paid for a guest post and waited all morning to see traffic coming from that blog.  It didn't come and it didn't come and it didn't come.  Finally, at noon, the blogger put my guest post up.  At 2:00, there was another sponsored post up.  She gave me two measly hours and I paid for a full priced sponsorship.

I would say that most people when they are doing a guest post on your blog expect the post to be up for 24 hours or close to that.  This month I have been emailing Jenni about doing a guest post.  She said she would be happy to let me BUT there would be a high possibility that there would be two posts that day.  She couldn't guarantee me 24 hours.  I respect this so much.  Instead of just taking my money and then posting two or three sponsored posts that day without letting me know, Jenni was upfront about it and told me exactly what the jig would be.

As I'm finishing this post, I realize it sounds a bit more bitter and negative than I meant it to. I'm sorry. This wasn't my intention. I just think that bloggers who operate this way with their sponsorship need to stop.  I think they need to be called out on it.  Sadly, there are  bloggers out there who are just all about making a buck.  They have discovered the wonderful fact that their "little corner of the web" can bring them in a pretty penny and their minds start racing.  I don't think they're evil in their intentions, I just think they get a bit carried away when they realize how much money they can make and I think us, as fellow bloggers, need to tell them to cut it out and treat the customer right!

And wow.  What a rant!  Excuse me, it's my grumpy time of month.

Peace.  Love.  Sleep.

Hello Fall. You again.

First things first:

Get yer sponsor spots now!  Hurry while they last!  Get a move on it, I'm telling ya!

I've got just a few spots left for October sponsorship.  Check out your options and then send me an email at lifeofbon@gmail.com to confirm your spot.  I do believe you'll be downright pleased by how affordable spots are!

Moving onwards...

I've always hated fall.  When I was a little girl my dad would say that it was his favorite season and I would stare back at him in shock.  Crazy old guy.  Doesn't have a clue in the world.  How could his favorite season be fall?  It means winter is coming!  It means school!  It means summer is as far away from us as it possibly can be!

It's just... let's see...how do I describe my love for summer?  It has always been... Intense.  Passionate.  Overbeating.  Bordering on obsessive.

When other girls scribbled "I love Brad" in their notebooks, I scribbled "I love summer."  And it is due to this fierce loyalty to June, July, and August that I saw anything that followed it as an immediate threat to my happiness.  Something that was never to be encouraged or enjoyed, rather it was to be loathed and detested.

Summer was swimming and vacations and no school and sun tans and sleeping in and it was everything I loved.  Fall was an end to all of those things and the beginning of school and homework and early mornings and shorter days and cold weather.  Each year with the first changing leaves, I would grieve.  This marks the real end of the summer.  Even the trees know it now.

For three years in a row, I went as far as to skip out on fall completely.  In 2006, I fled to Hawaii for the fall and in both 2007 and 2008 I was in Argentina.  I didn't want to deal with the mourning process of losing summer again.  Instead, I ran away from fall to places of eternal summer and endless sunshine.

This year I realize an apology is in order. So, fall, here it is..... (you better enjoy it, you're only getting this once!)

I'm sorry.

You see, I know now that I have long underestimated fall.  It is beautiful.  Suddenly I realize that gone are the 100 degree plus days, sitting in front of the fan trying to get cool, with an air conditioner that doesn't come close to doing the trick.  Gone are the sweltering cars.  Gone are the merciless sunburns. Instead the weather is in the low 80s, still warm and pleasant, and yet a far cry from the miserable levels of heat inflicted upon me in the summer.

Gone is the crazy panic of summer, the chaos, the urgency.  Fall has settled in as a much more simple, relaxed season.  Comfortable with itself.  Summer is insecure and has this constant need to please everyone, whereas fall makes no excuses and says simply "This is it. Enjoy it if you want."  If the seasons were entertainers, summer would be up there, center stage, juggling, dancing, singing, trying with all her might to get your undivided attention.  All the while, fall would be in the background just playing a pretty song on the piano, not really caring if you notice or not.

This September has been a sweet, dare I say, sublime, month.  I don't think there's been even an hour of bad weather, and the days continue to be long and inviting.  I can wear short sleeves or long sleeves, pants or a skirt, fall doesn't care.  He invites all of my clothes.  Fall is summer without its edge.  Without its harshness.  Without its demandingness.

I've missed out on the beauty of 25 falls because I was too distracted grieving the passing of summer.  I'll always love summer and its craziness and spontaneity.  But now I love fall just as much.  And maybe more.  Say it's a change of heart.  Say it's a part of growing up.  But from here on out I'm a-welcoming fall with open arms.

(But to winter I say, my feelings haven't changed a bit, and I will always hate you.)

Hubs and me on our fall getaway to St. George

A fall evening drive to Wal-mart for groceries yielded this beauty.  Not bad, fall, not bad.

Robbery: From foot doctors to As seen on TV products... they'll take your money and run!

I got robbed today.

By a podiatrist, of all people.  AKA a man who plays with feet for a living.

Now, no disrespect to podiatrists.  My dad was a podiatrist and he made a great living and provided well for his family of eight children.  I never wanted for anything in the world. (Except for maybe a little peace & quiet around the house and a bigger chest.)

For four years in high school, I even worked in my dad's office- sweeping up toenails, filing charts, and watching in horror as he fixed people's ingrown toenails.  I have all the respect in the world for podiatrists.

Except for this one.

I went to this podiatrist today because I have a condition known as burning, hot feet that has been plaguing me for months.  I finally manned up and made myself go to get it checked out.  Now, my normal doctor's co-pay is 20 bones, but the receptionist made me pay $35.00 because apparently podiatrists are "specialists" and that is what the specialists charge.  Again, no disrespect to the foot doctor, but podiatrists, YOU ARE NOT SPECIALISTS.  You are doctors.  Just like all the other doctors.  You didn't go to more school or less school than then other doctors so take your $20 co-pay and be happy with it!

After I went back into the room the podiatrist came on in.  I told him my feet were hot.  He gave me two creams and told me to try them and come back in two weeks if my feet are still hot.  Then he left the room.  I took the creams and made a beeline for the door before the receptionist caught on, "Oh, I'm sorry you have to pay for those."
"My insurance doesn't cover it?"
"No... I'm sorry it doesn't."
Worthless health insurance.  I blame this on you, Jordan School District.
"How much is it?"
"It's 15.00 a bottle."

And so I wrote another check, this time for $30.00, but you better believe I threw in a sassy look to the receptionist that said, "I am not happy about this!  NOT HAPPY!"

That my friends, is $65.00 for an eight minute visit to a doctor who told me to try a couple of bottles of lotions.

And yet, somehow telling you all this has made me feel so much better about the whole situation.

And now, for someone who actually has something NICE and UPLIFTING to say for today, I present to you Shane.  Shane's got it all when it comes to blogging- sass, style, and all the link ups your little heart could ever want.  If you haven't checked out her blog, you need to.  I especially love her Secrets on a Sunday thread.  It's the perfect way to vent anonymously.  Perfect, I tell you!

And now, take it away, Shane!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello loyal Bon Bon readers!

Boy do I have a treat for you today.
Oh yes, introductions. That's me, Shane,  down there.

I write over at Whispering Sweet Nothings & craft jewelry at WhisperingSweetly. Please pop by and introduce yourself, I love new visitors :)

Now on to the good stuff. The As Seen on TV.

My own mother has fallen victim to many of these products, easily swayed by anything marketed by Oprah, claiming to contain healthy antioxidants, or labeled with the words 'anti-aging.'  Since the launch of the infamous Snuggie, there have been several other laughable products that just get you wondering, who the hell buys this stuff? (Shane you better hope my mom doesn't read this!  She'll be disappointed in you for saying the h word!)

Bump-Its: My sister and I recieved these in our stockings from Santa 2 years ago (thanks mom).  Even Snooki hates the Bump-It trend.  I mean come on, who wants a little plastic arch peaking out from underneath their hair? And when you're in the moment with that special someone, it may come as a shocker when they tousle your hair and find this creature.

Gyro Bowl: The point of this being?  I've got an idea, lets pay $14.99 plus $9.99 shipping for a piece of plastic so our children will be entertained as they eat! And who thinks it's a good
idea to put pudding in this 360 contraption  to turn upside down over your head?

Turbie Twist: Okay so I admit, I do own 3 of these, in a variety of colors (thanks mom).  They are quite handy, especially for dorm life.  Instead of wrapping a huge towel around your head that will ineveitably fall off, this invention makes that walk down the hallway simpler, scratching maybe a few seconds off your daily routine. A towel in the shape of a turban? They could have thought of a more politically correct name for the product, I must say.

Cami-Secret: The before and after appear to be switched. "Gives the layered look of a camisole, without the hassle or bulk of an entirely separate garment" I've got a fab idea, lets sell a tiny piece of fabric to cover you up!  I mean, have you ever thought about how tough life must be for your neighborhood hoochie? She loves to flash her cleavage at bars and clubs, but must keep it business professional around the office. She could bring a change of clothes, but
that gets cumbersome to lug around everyday.  This boob apron works wonders, I'm sure.

Easy Feet: A shower for your feet! Could mankind get any lazier if we tried?

Pajama jeans: Not gonna lie, these would be a good investment for college kids ready to pass out when they stumble in at 3am and opt not to change into pj's, take off makeup, or brush their teeth.  Yet as a Miami University student, it's not socially acceptable to wear jeans out on the town. Even if it's 32 below in the dead of winter, skimpy dresses are a must.  So we run into a problemo. And at $30 a pop, that's as much as I'd pay for real un-hideous jeans. Forget it!

Booty Pop: Woah, a push-up bra for you butt?! I, myself could benefit from these (thanks for the advice mom).  I've heard horror stories about women dancing up on men and the pads scootching to the front.  Can you say creepy? They're a no go.

Shake Weight: If you use one of these and you're a man, I'm shaking my head. Why waste the money when you've got your own? And if you're a woman shaker, men will ineveitably raise eyebrows... and assess your skill level. Come on women, let's keep things PG in the exercise arena. And honestly, how big are your muscles truly gonna get with this mechanism?  If anyone's tested, I'm dying to know.

Tiddy Bear:  The ad features 2 chicks  obviously frustrated with the lack of furry stimulation to their upper torso who claim "seatbelts make it hard for them to breathe" Instead of investing in a ribcage implant to provide the protection their internal organs so desperately need, she opted for the Tiddy Bear.  The reality:  Who would find an irregularly shaped bear comfortable? And what kind of person would wear that monstrosity proudly on their chest, except maybe your 3 year old? I really hoped they were kidding about this one...

Seriously, who comes up with this stuff? Young Einsteins in the making.  And last but certainly not least:

Animee: A new beer specifically for the ladies! A “less gassy and lighter tasting” alternative to conventional beers, it comes in three varieties: standard, rose and citrus. I hope the men at the table aren't immasculated when I start pouring this stuff into the red solo cups. Hey maybe it'll be the wave of the future in alcoholism. I'm sold!

I mean who comes up with this stuff? And better yet, who falls for it? Mhmm mom, you're embarasssing.

Everything you ever wanted to know about blog sponsorship, Oh my!

This week I was reading a blog post about the ins and outs of blogging.  (By the way isn't blogging about blogging weird?  It's like dreaming about dreaming or reading about reading.  TOTALLY WACK!)  In the post, the blogger said, "I have paid to sponsor... and I wouldn't recommend doing it again. I received a small handful of clicks and even less followers from her. As a modern-day consumer, you are trained to ignore ads. Unless you can guest post for them, I would never advise paying to sponsor someone's blog ever again."  I was surprised when I read this.  I have seen my own blog grow so much faster since I have started sponsoring other blogs, and I have generally had very positive experiences with it.  I guess that's why it shocked me that someone else, a blogger that I like and trust, seemed so against it.

Naturally, I figured I would share what I know about sponsorship, what I look for in a sponsor, and how I know if a sponsorship has been effective for me.  World, I know you are all in desperate want of my sponsorhip expertise, therefore, wait no longer, I shall give it to you!

What I look for in a blog I sponsor:
1. The style of the blog must match my blog style. I have tried sponsoring DIY blogs or recipe blogs and it is always completely ineffective.  Crafty people usually don't care too much about my ramblings about ungrateful teenagers and mediocre firework shows.  They want a craft blog.  So while they might click on my blog once, they're certainly not going to stay.  Find a blogger who is similar in style to you and you'll be more effective.

2.  People I sponsor need to be organized.  If I'm going to give you money, then HELLO, you need to respond to my emails. (Blog pet peeve:  not responding to emails in a timely manner, especially when I have asked a specific question.  I don't expect an hour response time, but within a few days, please!)  It is also very important to me that I know what day the sponsorship begins, when it ends, and when my guest post will go up.  Some of us like to plan our posts on our blog around the guest post on the blogs we sponsor, so I think it's the least someone can do to tell their sponsor when the post is going up.

3.  Don't sponsor with just a button. Although I use them, I am opposed to buttons.  To start with, I don't understand them.  How is that effective advertising?!?  Almost every single button has got a picture of her kissing her husband (mine included!) with some dumb caption like "Life's a beach!".  I have no idea based on that button if I am going to like the personality or writing style of that blogger.  Here's an idea!  How about buttons that are at least somewhat informative?  WHO ARE THE BLOGGER GODS THAT DECIDED WE ALL MUST USE BUTTONS?  Because of my dis-affinity for buttons, (made that word up myself, two points for Bon!) I never sponsor a blog if all that is included is showcasing my button.  I invariably pay the extra for an indiviual guest post.  In my experience this has gone far and beyond the ability of a button to attract viewers.  If a blogger won't let me post on her blog, forget it honey, you ain't getting my money.

4.  Give me a shout out, blogger!   I really couldn't care less if a sponsor mentions me on twitter.  How many people actually see the #FF mentions and go follow their twitters?  Zero to one.  What I do care about is that she gives me a good introduction on her blog. I have sponsored blogs that didn't say anything about my guest post- it was just up.  I have also sponsored blogs where they talk me up a bit, you know, upsell me.  The best blog I ever sponsored was Living in Yellow. (Complete bang for your buck- I received more followers, more hits that day, and more kind, genuine comments than I have from any other sponsorship.)  Erin introduced me with this:  "I think I now realize why I am happy. It’s gotta be because of this girl.  Yes, the one below. Bonnie is one of my beautiful sponsors for March and I am so excited to bless you with her presence. This guest post is hilarious. I would not lie my friends.  See for yourself."  Isn't that amazing?  The percentage of people who are going to read my post went up from 25% to 60% just because Erin gave me a little shout out before my post.

5. A sponsor should say thank you.  A lot.  Hey, we're giving you money aren't we?  Say thank you, damnit!

What I do when I sponsor a blog:

While I definitely want to have a good experience sponsoring a blog, I understand that only half of that comes from the owner of the blog.  The other half comes from me.  If I really want to attract traffic to my blog, I have to do more than slap a post on a bigger, more popular blog.  I have to make the readers WANT to visit my blog.  Here's a few tricks I've used that have worked well for me:

1.  I send my button/guest post/ info when the sponsor asks for it.  Most sponsors are going to give some kind of deadline.  I do everything possible to get all my stuff in my that deadline.  I understand that if I am not cooperative than I'm not going to get any kind of special treatment.  I'll probably get posted on a random holiday/Sunday when no one looks at blogs.  If you want a sponsor to treat you right and take care of you, you gotta play by their rules.

2.  I like to make my guest posts a little weird.  Just a little.  Maybe weird isn't the best word.... Different?  There are millions and millions of blogs out there and I figured there has to be something a little bit quirky or eccentric about mine to get people to read it.  Something that stands out just a little bit from the run of the mill blogs.  I can't tell you how many blog introductions that I've read that go like this, "I'm Bonnie, a twenty something year old who loves her husband, loves to blog, and loves everything DIY."  Nobody is going to click on that because there is absolutely nothing unique about that blogger.  Don't be afraid to be "too different."  I would rather have someone strongly dislike my blog than feel completely apathetic toward it.

3.  Start simple.  I don't usually pay more than $10-20 for a sponsorship.  I'm still small and I haven't made a ton of money off of my blog so paying $50-100 for sponsorship just feels risky to me.  Once I paid $35 for a guest post and it was totally ineffective.  That's the last time I blow that much money on a guest post for awhile.   As far as numbers go, I usually try to sponsor a blog that has around 1000 followers to make sure it is worth the hassle of me writing a guest post.  I have, however, sponsored smaller blogs and had just as much success as the blogs with 1000+ followers

4.  Don't always pay to sponsor.  One of my favorite things to do is find a blog similar in style and size and ask the owner to swap guest post with me.  If the owner doesn't want to, it's no big deal, but there's absolutely nothing to lose.  Sometimes guest post swaps have even more effective for me than a paid sponsorship.  It's win/win- both bloggers get more traffic and the readers of both blogs get exposed to other blogs that they are apt to enjoy.

So what do you think?  Have you sponsored blogs before?  Would you ever or are you strongly opposed to it?  What is your spending limit when sponsoring?  Also, I have been struggling finding blogs to sponsor, so hook me up and tell me which ones you have sponsored and loved.  (You might even want to warn me of those you have you sponsored and unloved... but be gentle with your criticism!)
