23 Secrets of Life

Shirt: Very Jane Skirt: Forever 21 (Similar Here)  Shoes: Macy's  Necklace: StyleLately
Loving the geometric necklace from Style Lately... it's totally funky and goes with EVERYTHING.
And can I please get a round of applause for that last picture?  Self timer camera and it was my first attempt. Yes.  Be impressed.

It's taken me 26 long years on this earth to figure out that there's a couple things you can do that make your life so much easier.  It's like all I have to do are a few key things and, BAM, my life is easy.  It's pretty much common sense, yet half the world still hasn't caught on.  WHAT THE?  So I figured I'd share with you all....

23 SECRETS OF LIFE

1.  If you don't have time to take a shower, you can put on deodorant, spray some perfume and spray dry shampoo in your hair.  This can work for up to four days.  After that you're just gross.

2.  If you don't have time to wash your clothes, you can run a fabric softener sheet all over them.  VOILA!  Your clothes smell like they just came out of the dryer.

3.  When your house is clean you feel less stressed.

4.  Everybody has done something they are less than proud of.  Judge lightly.  Unless they keep doing it over and over and over.  Then you can judge however you feel like.

5.  Once you become an adult you can eat whatever you want and nobody gets mad at you, it's so great!  But your body feels like crap when you do that so do it sparingly.

6.  Remember people's birthdays.

7.  To be a good conversationalist (or a good friend!) ask questions.  (Loved Bella's post on this.)  Remember what people have told you (i.e. "I'm nervous for a test coming up) and ask them about it next time you see them.

8.  Ice cream fixes most problems.

9.  Talk slowly when you are in an argument.

10.  Don't make fun of people if they dance funny.  It's just rude.

11.  There will always be one cousin/aunt/co-worker/neighbor who offends you.  Start expecting it and you won't feel offended every time.  Or better yet, tell yourself everytime they say something rude you get to buy a new pair of shoes.  You'll start looking forward to the insults!

12.  Exercise can suck while you're doing it, but it feels good after.

13.  Nobody's life is really like the movies.

14.  Plans change.  That's okay.  Abandon that which no longer serves you.  Be willing to be flexible and see other paths than the one you originally planned on.

15.  If you can't remember somebody's name just ask them.  And then think about their name for seven seconds after they tell it to you.  You won't forget again.

16.  If you don't do the dishes tonight, they're still there tomorrow.  They don't do themselves.

17.  People like you if you like them.

18.  Everybody vomits at some point in their life.  It's to keep us humble and totally grossed out by the food that we eat.

19.  People don't notice your mistakes as much as you think.  (Stolen from The Happiness Project.)

20.  If you don't feel like cooking because you are stressed and overwhelmed, pizzas are only $10.

21.  If you don't take the garbage out it will smell.  Inevitably.

22.  Don't invest too much time, energy, and passion into things you have no absolutely no control over.  Like professional sports teams or how tall you are.

23.  When you feel totally lost with all the confusion and stress in your life, start making up the secrets of life to dish out to strangers and suddenly you will start to feel better.

WHAT'S YOUR LIFE SECRET?  The best life secrets will be highlighted on Friday's post with a link to your bloggy blog!

  1. you look so cute and skinny in those pictures.

    life secret?

don't put off something that can be done in that moment

and (back in my single days) swim suit bottoms are perfectly acceptable as underwear if you have no quarters to do laundry...

  2. I think number 23 is my absolute favorite... but the part about not being able to control things hits home too!

  3. Love this!!! You forgot chocolate though. Jk

  4. Oh my gosh I am soo soo in love with these. This post is seriously great. I am really working on being a better listener, I appreciate when people remember little things like a test coming up or my favorite song, and I want to do the same for others. As far as ice cream...I couldn't agree more! Ice cream fixes all my problem like magic!
Good luck studying for your crazy exam!

  7. Oh my goodness LOVE the offensive family/neighbor/friend advice. My sister (who lives in another country) is unbelievably rude EVERY time I talk to her. It's bizarre because there's five kids in my family and she's the only one who consistently offends EVERYONE. My mom and other sister and I could totally use the association of a wonderful pair of shoes with her less-than-familylike behavior... Especially because we all take her behavior so personally!

And my big advice (that my father taught me)...
Nothing is truly achieved without an awkward conversation. So say it, bask in the weirdness, then celebrate the results later. Plus, having THAT talk always makes you feel better than avoiding it.

  8. Everyone has their confident undies--the undies that make them feel and look the best! So wear those on big days, or days you're nervous for, and things normally turn out a-ok.

  9. Sooo true!

My life lesson? This too shall pass. The good, the bad, the mediocre.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Laugh everyday. Laugh at yourself. Laugh with others. Just don't laugh at people. It's not nice. If you can find a job that lets/makes you laugh, keep it!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Give people the benefit of the doubt, and ESPECIALLY don't bad-mouth the mistakes they supposedly have made. That way, when you find out in the end that they're really not as bad as you think, you won't look as stupid.

I totally wrote a whole blog post on this exact situation after I bad-mouthed a parent who tried to get me fired after a particularly bad parent-teacher conference:

  12. Be a good listener....not only will people feel like they can tell you anything (and they will, which can be quite scandalous at times), but you'll have opportunities to show your loyalty and friendship to those you care about.

  13. I loved this.

Life's secret... if you are upset or mad or worried about something now, look 5 years into the future, chances are you won't even be able to remember what had you so worried, mad or upset. Time puts everything into perspective.

Usually you need to get old before you figure this one out LOL.

  14. The best secret that I have learned is that "Everything happens for a reason"

    ReplyDelete
  15. My life lesson is that life is what is happening right now, not all the plans you are making for the future, so remember to stop and enjoy the now!

  16. #24 - smile, even if you don't want to. It's hard to stay upset, feel bad (for too long), or feel blue if you're' smiling.

    ReplyDelete
  17. If you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything.

    Loved this post!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Cute post, but you do go back and forth with your emotions!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I love this. all so true, and made me giggle :)

  20. Nobody's life is perfect, is one of my favorites! :)

  21. Trim, shape, tweeze, and fill in your eyebrows. If you don't know how to shape them, pay someone else to. If you have sperm eyebrows, just stop everything.

I never miss an opportunity to share this advice. People freakin' underestimate their eyebrows and it makes me a little bit crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Also, I just read everybody else's inspirational comments, and mine is about sperm eyebrows. This is so awkward.

    ReplyDelete
  23. This is so true and made me feel so much better about myself!
    Thank you!

  24. This was so cute! I loved your life lessons.

My advice? If you aren't going to take the time to do something right the first time, you're going to have to make the time to do it over again.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Life is about trial and error. What worked for your mom/friend/neighbor may or may not work for you. If one thing doesn't pan out, try something else and keep trying until you find what works.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Do what is true to you! I love your advice, especially about the rude/insulting people! I can't wait to laugh when I count how many pairs of shoes this person is going to buy ME! ha ha xo

    ReplyDelete
  27. your life could always be harder or could always be easier, but that doesn't mean that you can't except some situations as hard, as well as celebrate things that are good. comparing your trials and joys to others ruins that!

    ReplyDelete
  28. The booty shot made me laugh...I get that it was for us to see the back of the shirt...still... :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Life secret: You have no control over other people or events - the only thing you can control is your reaction.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Live your own life. Find joy in what makes you happy, not what "should" make you happy. Be proud of your own successes, instead of comparing yourself to "more" successful people. We all have our own paths to follow, and no two will look alike!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Love your list! Here's one that we've all been hearing since we were kids but it holds up in adulthood still...If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all.

    ReplyDelete
  32. #19 - Yes! I am sloooowly reading this book...when I remember it's on my kindle. It's a good find.
I love all of these and your sexy photo shoot. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Everything happens for a reason so don't sweat the small stuff. It may seem crazy now, but give it time and you'll realize why things happened the way they did in the past - because it brought you to the present!

    I love this post.

When you're in a rut or feeling down or like nothing is in your control, change something little about your day/routine and put on BonneBell lip balm and mascara.

Smile. Yes. Even through the tears.

  36. Lifes not fair. The sooner you understand this and accept it, the better off you'll be.

  37. I must say that dry shampoo has totally changed my life. And the vomit thing... so true! Also huge props for the camera timer shot, that's amazing you got yourself mid-air! Stopped by from Whitney's blog. :-)

  38. Life secrets:

-The person across the table is probably thinking the same things you're scared to say (My dad told me this in reference to dating, and I've found it's true. If you're thinking you want to hold their hand, generally they are too, etc. It also works in class/work. If you have a question, the person next to you has the same one too.)

-Two things in life are free: church and volunteering. Do them.

  41. Hmmmm mine would be: Know your limitations! There are only 24 hours in a day and you can't possibly stay awake and be productive for all of them. Always schedule time to refuel, re-energize, and relax.

  46. Haha. Love these!! My favorite rule.. If you see something you want at the store, don't buy it. Wait a few days and if you remember it later, then go get it. If you forget about it, you didn't really want it that bad in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Lol. This list is perfect. I love the first one personally. Cause ya, four days is just gross, but I will totally be down for three:p

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love this list.
My life secret: Spend at least 10 minutes every day looking out the window (or outside) just daydreaming...could be about what your next blog post will be like, putting yourself in your favorite show/book/movie, thinking about plans/dreams for the future, or just cloud watching. It's peaceful.

#5..yes yes and yes! i love that i can have ice cream for dinner, and then go to bed without brushing my teeth.. ice cream and chocolate are staple meals at my crib!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I love #5! And I especially love #7. I'm always so confused when someone asks me a follow up question about something, I have to stop and think, "Wait, when did I tell them about that?" but I'm always impressed that they remember!

  53. My husband works at a bank in a rural community. What does that have to do with life secrets? He sees so many awesome, interesting, "salt of the earth" type of people come in and out everyday, and a few months ago he started emailing me things he's heard customers say. So this is thanks to an older gentlemen from the bank:

"Normal" is a setting on your washing machine.

I love it! It snowed in May this year here. Everyone was outraged! MAY! And I wanted to tell them all, "Hey, NORMAL is just a setting on your washing machine."

It would have come in handy when I was in the classroom too. Student says, "Um, normally you only give us two essays on the test." HEY KID! NORMAL is a setting on your washing machine.

Let's not live our lives normally!

  56. My secret of life is that things are always much worse when we're analyzing them or dreading them or leading up to them. The actually event, situation, or conversation is never quite so bad as the one we imagined in our mind. That, and you already know the answer you're seeking. Might just take you a little while to hear yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  57. My life lesson is: the more you talk the stupider you sound.
I'm loving the happiness project. Thanks so much for sharing!!

  58. Needed this today. You're brilliant.

  59. I love these so so much! Cute outfit by the way! I think we need to be best friends! :)

  60. Life secret- always turn around and check your outfit from the back in the mirror before you leave. So simple in theory yet so difficult to do in reality!

    ReplyDelete
  61. This was seriously amazing. As soon as I saw this in my bloglovin feed I basically almost hyperventilated because I knew it would be awesome. Oh and I did pin this, and if you know me you would know that I don't pin a lot of blog posts, so congratz!
