When I woke up this morning I rolled over drunkenly and thought, "Wow. It sure is bright this morning...."

Instant panic.  Why was it so bright?

I looked at my phone.

8:06.

EIGHT OH SIX!!!

My contract time at Copper Hills starts at the unearthly hour of 7:00 am.  First period starts at 7:40.  I live 45 minutes from the school.  On a normal day I am awake at 5:55 and out the door by 6:20.

You can imagine the sheer and utter panic shrieking through my body.  I had two missed calls from the teacher in the room next to me.  I called her right away...
"Steve has your students!  He has a prep so they are just chilling in his room right now." She informed me.
A slight relief.
I told her the reading assignment to give Steve to give to the students.  "Uh... tell Steve I'll be there in an hour..."  I tacked on at the end.  No big deal.  Just make other teachers teach your classes because you can't get your butt out of bed.

When I got to school (I missed all of first period!) Steve was relaxed and chill and just calm as can be, which helped me to calm down a bit.  "I'm glad I could grab them and have them do their work in here..." he said, "I didn't want the principal to find out.  Last year I was late and the principal himself called.  It was awful."

I was so immensely grateful to him for his kindness.  It reminded me of when I was a little kid and how my siblings and I would always have each other's back against the parentals.  No matter how much we hated each other we would always cover for one another, making sure we were protected from our parents.  We banded together against the authorities.  And here I am... 15 years later, still banding together with my teacher buddies against the authorities.  Funny how some things in life never change.  I guess it's just nice knowing someone will give you the benefit of the doubt, cover for you, and not judge you for your mistakes.

What I learned today:  There is nothing that will make you feel more out of control in your life/ more stressed/ more like a total and utter failure than sleeping two hours past your alarm.

I have been sufficiently humbled.

Now... GROUP GIVEAWAY DAY.

You know the drill- enter below and one winner takes all.  I hope you find some great blogs to follow.  Every month through accepting sponsors I find a couple of blogs that become permanent must reads.  I hope you find a couple (or a dozen!) too!

  2. Lol. Omg. I've done that before, but I was working at a really prestige law office. I woke up a hour late, but I didn't panic. I actually didn't even realize I was late. I mean, I took my time getting ready. Then all of the sudden I looked at the clock and it snapped. I literally freaked out. haha. Needless to say, I just called in that day and took off.

Isn't it refreshing when another person does something selfless for you? :) That's awesome that he took your class until you arrived.

  4. I've overslept before on FINALS day! Brushed my teeth, threw on clothes and raced to school in under 10 minutes. Made it as the bell rang. I can't imagine over sleeping that long (if I did the world would come to a stop at home!).

  5. Yikes! I'm glad you had someone watching your back!

I've overslept before... I think we all have. I have done it several times. Oops. I've called in and I've also just called that I'm running late due to illness which usually turns into staying home all day anyways. I even feign getting ready, as if someone is watching me and really knows. Haha! The guilt! Thank goodness for your awesome co-worker!

  7. I totally did that my first year teaching. Luckily we were doing testing that day (What was the test we did before we gave all the juniors the ACT? It was that one) and I was a lowly hall monitor and so no one would have missed me I'm sure except I called the office to let them know I was running late. I don't think they did anything about it. . . can't remember it was like SIX years ago (wow).

I cry. I've woken up an hour past my alarm. With only 1/2 hour to shower/get ready before school. I always taught 8am classes so panic was an understatement. Good to know your teacher friend had your back. Whew!

  10. I live an hour away from my school, too. I always have that fear that I'm going to wake up late. I set two alarms and constantly check my phone when I wake up throughout the night. lol. Luckily for me I have first period planning so I have a little room just in case.

I like how we teachers all stick together against the principal. haha.

  11. Wow what a life saver! Me and my brother were the same way.. always fighting with each other but we definitely would cover for one another against our parents!

  12. Hi! I completely agree with you that sleeping through an alarm is one of the worst feelings there is, and is sure to bring a on a cold sweat in even the calmest individuals out there!

  13. Yes, waking up past your alarm does bring about an episode of panic. Imagine the anxiety I felt when I woke up past my alarm, I lived over half an hour away and I had to open up the banking center. Needless to say, the first bank customer was not thrilled. I did however surprise myself. I mean, who would have thought I could shower and get dressed in under 15 minutes (I certainly never knew I was capable of such a thing). At least the principal never found out. The bank manager was ready to kill me!

  30. I hate sleeping in!!!!!!! I've done that a couple of times and it's not fun at all.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh no...that sounds like something I would do. It must be with big families that they want to protect each other. I was raised with one brother and he would throw me under the bus in a heart beat. My kids, being a larger family, will protect each other from me. Makes my job a bit harder....but at the same time I love that they will do that for each other. My Ben was getting picked on at school (4th grade) and his little brother (2nd) grade told the bully he was going to beat him up if he didn't leave his brother alone. :) Not that approve of fighting...but loved that he stood up for him!
