I miss my hood rat students

Well, guys.  I miss teaching.

My student teacher took over the reins with my seniors in January and then my juniors in February, and that leaves me here, aimlessly wandering the halls day in and day out.  Gosh, those students sure gave me a lot of grief and now I just miss them like crazy- sad that I'm not watching their progress day in and day out, that it's not me teaching them, helping them to grow, laughing at their dirty jokes.

I pop into my classroom for about 30-60 minutes a day.  I usually do a little informal observation and make sure that no boys have burned down the room yet, but mostly I just watch those teenagers and miss them.  It really is so weird.  My student teacher will teach until April 10 and then I am back in the saddle.  Don't get me wrong, the break has been nice in so many ways and I have been able to work on other projects and goals, but I just miss teaching.  Today I was talking about with my student teacher about their parts of speech unit which they didn't too hot on.  She's totally capable of teaching it and helping them reach mastery, but I just couldn't help it, "I'll teach it!  You can watch me!  I'll teach on Friday!" I offered, trying to hide my eagerness.  We both know that she could totally do it, but I think she humored me when she smiled and said, "Yah, that's fine.  You can review that with them on Friday."

Thank goodness I still get to teach my AP class.  If they had taken that from me too I would be one lost soul in the desert.

For the rest of your entertainment today, I've got Lauren offering some practical and awesome solutions for how to get through this last little stretch of winter.  Some of you are basking in 70 degree weather and you can all just be quiet, but the rest of us are dying dying dying for spring to finally get here.  Let's here it Lauren!

What to Do When Spring Won't Come Quickly

I'm Lauren and I blog over at The Albrechts Blog about faith, running, decorating, moving across the country and all the little things in between. In real life I like to talk about the weather and I know I can't be the only one begging spring to show it's face as soon as possible. It was 18 degrees this week in New England, but with the wind chill it felt like three degrees. Yes, you read that correctly. Three degrees I tell ya!

So today I'd like to share with you a few tips for surviving when spring is oh so close but not quite here yet. When you can't stand the thought of the cold one more second, here's how I suggest you pretend spring is here among us:

1. Pour yourself an ice cold diet coke and drink it with a straw. I don't know about you, but nothing feels more like summer than sipping on a diet coke.

2. Find that music that makes you think of driving with the windows down without a care in the world. For me, that's "Dark Haired Darling" by Josh Bales. I can feel my skin warming up already.

3. Paint your nails a bright color. Even if your skin isn't as tan as you'd like to imagine, there's just something warm about those bright colors you haven't seen for a while.

4. Do something spontaneous. Grab your friend and go on a scavenger hunt, take your husband out for frozen yogurt (eat it inside, of course!), or play hookie from work or school and take a day trip to a nearby town you haven't visited quite enough.

5. And if you really need a pick-me-up... live vicariously through your friends who live in Florida or California. I have to admit that this time of year... I love them, but I hate them.

Happy spring-fever, everyone!

  3. That's one of the reasons I'm considering staying and teaching part-time next year--I'd miss the students too much. But....this isn't a gender reveal...I'm dying wanting to know!

  4. Ugh I hear ya Bonnie. I know it was the right choice to not be in youth ministry anymore... but I miss those guys. They had their first weekend trip without me in February and I was super depressed they were all doing something without me. (Granted, it's my favorite winter event.) I had to text all of them to say how much I missed them!

  5. I'm currently student teaching right now (first grade) and I'm loving it!! But I can tell that my cooperating teacher wants to still teach things so we switch topics and times and whatnot so that the students have a mix of both of us. It is definitely a process to make sure we stay on pace with when the other person is coming to start something but it's working thus far!
