The Life of Bon: It's almost time...

It's almost time...

There comes a certain time of year.

Pencils are forgotten.
Folders are left in lockers.
Kids are hyper.
Rowdie.
Hormonal.

"Can today be a free day?"
They beg.
They plead.
"We don't feel like doing anything today!"
"Please?!?"

I catch my eyes wandering
to the windows
to the sunshine
and the
green
green
grass.

Suddenly I don't feel like
planning units
thinking of fun activities
emailing parents
explaining how to write a thesis statement
for the 1,234,734th time
or
grading papers.

No.
I definitely don't feel like
grading
papers.

This time of year
my students aren't so cute anymore.
Not so funny.
Not so endearing.

You know what's cute, funny, and endearing?
Ice cream
Sleeping in
Swimming Pools
Volleyball
Vacations

My students are

not
prepared

not
on time

not
ready for the quiz.

"But Teacher!  It's beautiful outside!"
"So?  That means you don't have to do your homework?"

But inside I understand.
Because after school I will ignore their
stacks
and stacks
of
ungraded
papers
and instead
go lay out at the pool
or play tennis
or longboard to the dairy queen
for a
cherry
dipped
ice
cream
cone.

It's that time of year.
Almost
summer
time.

  3. It's that time of year again. That time when the weather here is starting to get horrible... and all you folks in the Northern Hemisphere start posting about all the fun summery things you're going to do. That time of year when I get horribly jealous! I will try and keep my jealousy contained as best as possible.

  8. Sunshine is so rare where I live that when it does come out it makes me want to drop everything and go outside. Where I promptly get burned and have to spend the next few days cringing anytime I have to put on a shirt because my back has turned into a giant blister. Not that it's happened before or anything...

  10. "Can we have a free day?" What is this free day they speak of? Who gives those? And I have to tell them, in the event that I do in fact give them twenty minutes of free time they are all complaining of boredom 5 minutes in.

  12. I absolutely adore that my kid's teacher has 'forgotten' to give homework pretty much every night since spring break. I think it's because he's a parent too, and just gets it.

  15. AAAAAGGHHHHH! Finally! Someone has put into words the ridiculousness that is spring fever at my school. The other week, it got so bad that in my last hour (creative writing), I finally said, "All right, I've had it--everyone outside! We're playing Capture the Flag!"

Then one girl asked, "Are we supposed to pay attention to anything in particular to write about after?"

    Bless her heart.
