You know you're a sophomore when...

So many grammar rules to teach the hoodlums, so little time.

students
student's
students'

Do YOU know what the difference is in those three words?  Because none of my sophomores do.

I was deeply immersed in a fascinating discussion of possessives and apostrophes, trying to teach those youngsters how to master their writing.

"Now, for the hardest rule, when an apostrophe comes AFTER the "S".  There are a couple of occurrences for this one.  The first one is if the person or thing end in "S" to begin with.  Does anyone in here have a name that ends in "S"?

I looked around the room: Melissa, Jordan, Baylee, Austin,  no names that ended in S.

Then I heard from the back of the room,

"Well my name is Gracccccccccccccccccccccccce.........",  with special emphasis on the S sound.

We all looked at her.  Others started to  softly giggle at her error.  The laughter grew louder.  I joined in.  Grace chuckled too.  Before we knew it, we were all laughing .

"You do realize that your name doesn't acually end in an "s", right Grace?" I questioned, once I had controlled myself.

She smiled and replied, "Oh."

Ah, sophomores.  They are truly the light of my life.

Pushups.  This is proof that I can convince sophomores to do anything.

Happy Anniversary... And how to not kill each other the first year

March 12, 2011.

The day Hubs and I finally sealed the deal.

I know it's cliche, but seriously, can you even BELIEVE how fast a year flies by?  Half of the time I sit here staring at Hubs and think "Who are you and what are you doing in my house?"

I guess I've learned a thing a two in my marriage adventure.  And you know me, always wanting to share my wisdom with others, I decided to celebrate my anniversary by sharing a few marriage tips.  So buckle up chicas, you're about to learn how to not only survive, but thrive in that first year of matrimony.

1.  You're not always right.  It was a weird day when I realized that I believed something 100% and Hubs believed something else 100% and neither of us were right or wrong, we just believed differently.  The ever present urge to insist that you are right about a certain subject is poison to a marriage.  POISON, I TELL YOU!

2.  If you're mad/upset/ frustrated, go to sleep.  I know there is the old adage that says "Never go to bed angry" but for Hubs and me, when we try to solve problems late at night it just snowballs into more problems and more disagreements.  The best thing I ever did for me and Hubs was to just go to bed, sleep it off, go to work the next day, and then come home with a clear head to discuss the problem.  Somehow it doesn't seem nearly the "problem" after you've been able to step away from the problem and think about other things all day long.

3.  Say sorry, even if you think you're right.   Saying sorry is not an admission that you are wrong, only an admission that you feel sorry that you have hurt the other's feelings.  Both Hubs and I are sensitive little guys so it definitely can never hurt to be quick to say sorry.

4.  Money doesn't matter.  Don't let that become a major issue in your marriage.  Spend less than you earn, save for a rainy day, and then don't think about it.  I have spent way too much time worrying about budgets, finances, student loans, etc, etc, etc.  When it comes down to it we have food in our stomachs, a place to live, and we have each other.

5.  Hold hands.  Hubs always holds my hand in public.  If he doesn't, I grab his.  It's interesting what such a small gesture will do- it makes you feel loved, secure, protected.

6.  If something is bothering you, talk about it.  If it is important to you, then you have to realize that it will be important to your spouse, as well.  Keeping feelings in is only going to result in resentment and one day you're going to explode, girlie, you're just going to explode and that ain't gonna be pretty for any of us to watch.  That being said...

7.  Pick your battles.  Not EVERYTHING needs to be discussed and you don't need to go to the mattresses over every little issue.  Let some things slide.  If you can think to yourself "Is this going to matter in a month?" and the answer is no, then it's probably best to just let that one go.

8.  Do things to surprise each other.  Nothing makes me happier than when Hubs unexpectedly unloads the dishwasher, has dinner ready for me, or buys me my favorite candy bar.  Little things that make the other know that you are thinking about them and can mean alot.  And if you're reading here thinking, "Well, freak, my husband/boyfriend/lover never does any of that stuff for me!" just remember this one word- Karma.  It'll come back to you, I promise.  He'll see your efforts and want to reciprocate.

9.   Be there when the other experiences a great loss/ disappointment/ heartache.  Hubs has been there to hug me and let me cry when I have missed my dad, when I didn't get a job I desperately wanted, when my uncle passed away.  I've been there for him when he didn't get coveted roles in plays, experienced disappointment with friends, and failed biology (Oops!  Sorry Hubs, I didn't mean to let that one slide! )  You've got to stick by their side, no matter the grief or frustration they are experiecing.

10.  Kiss!  Every day.  My dad once told everyone in our church to make sure to kiss for at least ten seconds a day no matter how long you've been married.  Kissing couples stay married and that's the truth.

That's one year in the books.  Here's to 100 more!

Viva Las Vegas!

Well girlies, (ahem... and men.  This blog does NOT discriminate against gender.  All are welcome around these parts!) I feel like I just met ya'll and now I'm flying the coop.

Please forgive me.

It's just that Monday is Hubs' and my first year anniversary.  My deepest love in this world (besides diet coke and trashy reality TV, of course) is vacations.  Any excuse to get out of town and forget the world is alright with me.  My next four days will be spent in good old Las Vegas.  Those high schoolers are going to have to fend for themselves, suckers!

I have been overwhelmed by the amount of love and friendship I have felt from readers of Erin's blog.  Looks like that girl really does know how to throw a party!  There are lSO MANY comments/ emails/ nice things that I am dying to reply to.  However, due to this little vay-kay, it will likely be Wednesday, or maybe even Thursday before I can reply to them all.  So be patient, my new friends, I promise I have read your sweet things, and you better believe I plan on hollering back!

Now, if you don't mind, I'm off to spend a little time in 72 degree weather...

And because I can't help but reminisce a little, this is what happened last time I went to Vegas, February of 2010.

I watched in sorrow as my friend Mandizzle tried her luck at the penny slots.  She lost many a penny, much to her chagrin.  (Apparently I was on an important phone call?)

I drove down my two month old Toyota Corolla, and like the geniuses we are, we tried to cram seven people in the car.  Not all people were small.  Somehow it worked.  (If you look close at this picture you can see me strangely grabbing my own hair.  I have no explanation.)

Already 23 and unmarried in the state of Utah, surely this is a travesty! I figured it was about time I just settled for what I could get.  I about dang near took up residence with the guy below.  Luckily, I was talked out of it, and Hubs came prancing into my life months later.  Dodged a bullet there, didn't I?!?

Mandizzle made a huge mistake.  I'm talking about the nachos.  Not the guy.

We watched some water dancing to music.  Cooler than it sounds my friends, cooler than it sounds!  (Notice Mandy and Nacho boy getting their flirt on in the background.)

When I told Nacho boy that I had never gambled before, he threw me $100 to spend on the blackjacks table.   All my friends are just rolling in $100 bills, you understand, don't you?
I lost it all within five minutes.  I never saw that guy again.

And lastly, I got made of for drinking water and eating butterscotch pudding when everyone else was drinking up a storm.  Hey, if you don't want to drink you don't want to drink, and you've got to stick to your guns, you know?!?

What does this year's trip to Vegas hold in store?  Tune in Wednesday (wow, can't believe I just said tune in.  I am aware I am not a radio station, that was just weird) to get all the juicy details!

Welcome to my home!

You want to know a secret?

Okay, but don't tell anyone...

I'm expecting A LOT of company today.  That's because Erin from Living in Yellow, who is ALWAYS throwing a huge old party at her place with thousands of visitors told all of her partiers to head on over to my house today!  Can you believe it?!?

Naturally, I've been nervous.  So many new visitors?!?!?  What if they don't like me?  What if they think my place is ugly?  And most importantly, what if the toilet gets clogged?

Me.  Stressed about company.  So stressed that I can't make the picture go normal.
Obviously, today has been stressful trying to get everything ready for my company.  Any great party needs a great hostess, am I right?  And you know how it is when you get visitors, don't you?  You've got to clean up the place, organize everything, make some yummy food, and make sure that everyone feels welcome when they come by.

Well, I'll tell you straight up, there is no food.

I did try to semi clean up the place though, which is saying something!  And I CERTAINLY want my visitors to feel welcome.  For those of you are regular visitors around here, just sit back and enjoy yourselves while a bunch of newcomers try to figure out if they want to stick around for the party or not.  They'll figure out soon enough what kind of throw downs we have around here.

I just had a genius idea!  I think since I've got company in my home I must take them all on a tour, right?  Perfect.

Ready?  Tour officially STARTED.  NOW.

Hi.  This is my blog.  Welcome.

This is me.  Also featured in the picture is Hubs.  (Sorry about the weird faces.  It was wedding day.  Sexual tension, you understand right?)

Up top is my header.  I didn't make that.  I'm a techy idiot so instead I won a giveaway and convinced the incredibly talented Linzey to do it for me.  So you can chalk all that up to her.

Over to the left is a weird picture of me with brown long hair.  Ignore that picture because my hair is short and goldenish now.  I change my hair color/style approximately every four months so don't plan on it staying any one way for long.

Up at the top you'll see my "About" section.  You could skip that part of the tour entirely if you want.  It's highly embarrassing and awkward.  I don't think I've ever felt so much like a junior high student when I was trying to write that.  Every day I wake up and think first thing in the morning, "I've got to change that terrible About Me."  And then I never do.

Because some things are just awkward.
There's a lot of stuff around this blog, but it might be kind of hard to find and you might not want to visit every single place, so I'll direct you from here and you can decide for yourself where you want to go.  Kind of like an independent tour, if you will.  I teach English for a living, so sometimes I write about the punks who fill 40 hours of my week.  I write about their dirty conversations I overhear in the bathroom, the times when they confuse horse for whores, and when I get in trouble for allowing my students to threaten Justin Bieber.

If you are in more a lovey dovey mood, you might want to try some posts about Hubs.  There is the celebration of mine and Hubs' six month anniversary together, the time when Kim Kardashian's divorce led me to some deep thoughts about marriage, and of course, who could leave out a romantic trip to the gyno?!?!

If you are in a serious type of mood, I've got posts for that too!  My most difficult post to write was on the two year anniversary of my dad's death, and then there was the time where a trip to my coat closet made me realize how incredibly blessed I've been, or maybe the time when my sister helped calm me down when I was having a major freak out six days before my wedding.

If you just want to laugh for a little while you could go all the way back to the time I had a Korean roommate and we were robbed, when I pulled a prank on all my students, or maybe, just maybe, you need to know about the time I stole underwear from Victoria's Secret.

And of course, you can't miss the time Hubs brought home a huge teddy bear to teach me a lesson on parenthood.

So, please, by all means, make yourselves comfortable in my humble abode!  Mi casa es su casa as they say in the land down South, and I want more than anything for you to feel at home around here.  Any other questions about the place or confusions about this strange tour, go ahead and email me at lifeofbon@gmail.com.  Otherwise sit back and make this place your home!

Let's talk about sex, baby!

This is by far the most "risque" and "edgy" thing that I have written on my blog, so I am taking a big breath and diving in head first, hoping not to drown.  Mom, I'm still a good girl.  I promise.

Lately I've been worried.  It started a few weeks ago at lunch when I mentioned jokingly to another teacher that I was going to have to start telling my students to get on birth control (Why I need to tell my students this is a whole different story, but we don't want to go there tonight.)  This teacher, well informed on Utah education, told me that if I did suggest birth control, I might lose my job.  Unaware of Utah's strict adherence to abstinence-only education, I asked her to please elaborate.   Apparently Utah educators are not allowed to teach birth control methods or advocate the use of birth control in any form.  To do so is in violation with the state legislature, and would put an educator's job at risk.  That means that if students ask me a question about birth control, I am not at liberty to answer, and instead must respond, "Ask your parents."

I'm no flaming liberal, but I believe this is wrong.  I am a firm believer of knowledge in all its forms, and that means knowledge of birth control options.  That doesn't mean I approve of premarital sex; it means I oppose teen pregnancy.

After this disturbing lunch conversation, I went home and googled around for a bit. (P.S.  Isn't it amazing that google is a verb now?) On my quest, I learned a thing or two.  Currently House Bill 363 sponsor Rep. Bill Wright is pushing a bill for abstinence-only education throughout the state.  In the bill, Wright states that "discussing birth control and homosexuality promotes promiscuity among teens and advocates the use of drugs." He believes this legislation is needed to protect "the innocence of students".  (What I wouldn't love to tell old Bill about exactly how innocent my students are.) His original bill bans any "discussion of sexuality except abstinence and fidelity in marriage." His only alternative is "not teaching sex education at all." (Examiner.com. "Utah's own Don't Ask Don't Tell, Sex and Birth Control.") Wright says teaching sexuality isn’t a priority in education. “It is not like all our students are going to die if they don’t learn promiscuous behavior."

Wright's bill passed 8-7.  Meaning that as of right now, Utah presses forward stalwart in their abstinence-only sex education.

Naturally, this raises some questions.  If you don't want a person to engage in certain behavior is it best to completely ignore the behavior and act like it has never existed?  Or is it best to properly educate, even if that means more exposure to the negative behavior?  How about when something like a pregnancy, a baby, a HUMAN LIFE is at stake?  Can we really afford to not educate students because we think that just by mentioning birth control students are more likely to engage in promiscuous behavior?

I hope I am not sending out the wrong message about my beliefs.  I waited for marriage to have sex, and I absolutely believe that that was the right decision.  There is great comfort, security, and love in that decision.  I do not condone premarital sex in any form, and I especially don't condone high school students having sex.  BUT... if I talk to a student about birth control, does that automatically imply that I approve of the sex?  Or does it say that I advocate the proper education of teenagers and the protection of unborn babies?

What I find most disturbing of all is that it is legal in the state of Utah to have an abortion, but it is illegal for a teacher to suggest to a student to get on birth control.  A little backward, no?

Since when has it ever been in humans' best interest to keep information from them?  Hiding knowledge is never going to improve a problem, and it is never going to be a solution.  The ideal solution would be to have parents teach their children about sex.   "Encourage parents to have ongoing explicit age-appropriate discussions with their children about sex. It is vital that we lift the veil of silence and discomfort. Many parents are naively worried that they will give their children ideas, or somehow corrupt them with facts. The fact is that children are surrounded by sex, lots of bad information, and tons of sexually explicit materials. But it is a proven fact that the more reliable factual knowledge kids have about sex, the more they talk to their parents about sex, the less likely they are to engage in it." (feministmormonhousewives.org)

And if parents do not educate their children, should teachers shoulder that responsibility?    I believe, yes.  Nowadays teachers are already doing and teaching many things that have traditionally been taught in the home, so why do we shy away from this subject?

Our job it to educate, whatsoever the subject may be.

Now... what do you think about the subject?  Go ahead, add your two cents.  I know you want to.

Blonde and Intelligent- an oxymoron? I think not!

Hey guys.

I'm TIRED.

I took the ACT today and it was 4 hours long and I've never had to focus so much in my life and I'm telling you, that ACT was rough!

Oh, wait... that was my students.  Not me.  But still... I'm tired.

So, to celebrate my exhaustion, I'm turning over the reins to Alana from Life & Times.  I've got a lot of respect for this woman.  She's smart as heck, already graduated from college and working on her MBA and only 22 years old. (Wowzers!) AND she's a foster mom.  Not many woman are that ambitious/kind/selfless/BEAUTIFUL.

Alright, Alana, take it away!

Hey y’all, I’m Alana from Life & Times of the Intelligent Blonde!

Bonnie and I have been planning to this guest post for quite awhile now, so hopefully this post proves to be worth the wait!

In case you haven’t been to my blog before, let me tell you a little bit about myself:

I’ll be 23 in July.
I’m a blonde (surely you figured that out by my blog title and the picture).
I am currently working on my MBA—I’ll graduate in August.

I’m a Publicist at a Publishing Company (which basically means that I type Press Releases, all day, while jamming out to music and/or watching movies).

I’m a full-time foster mom; I have three kids under the age of three. Over the years, we have had 20 children come through our home. I won’t lie and say it’s easy, especially when considering the massive amounts of times I’ve been thrown up on, but I will say it’s the most rewarding thing I’ll ever do!  I love knowing that I made a difference in their lives (even if they’re too young to ever remember me).

I LOVE to travel!

I get tired of boys quickly and throw them out (I’m kind of like a blonde Kim Kardashian…only I’m not rich and whiney, and I have a normal sized butt)

I’m very stingy with my money, but I will splurge on Coach, diamonds, shoes, and Tiffany’s (my newest obsession).

At Life & Times of the Intelligent Blonde, you won’t find recipes, what-I-wore posts, craft tutorials, sappy love posts, or pictures of animals.

What you will find i, Awkward & Awesome Thursdays, Lana Lately, Headlines, Not-So-Intelligent Blonde Moments, and any other random thing I feel like blogging about.

I hope you’ll stop by, because there’s never a dull moment in the Life & Times of the Intelligent Blonde.

Until Next Time,

The Intelligent Blonde

Six Days... and why I love my sister

Hubs and I are six days away from our one year wedding anniversary.

I'm a big date person.  Not only do I remember important dates in my life, I remember everything that was happening on the days surrounding those big dates.  A year ago today, six days before I was to don the white dress, was my wedding breaking point.  It was a Sunday and I was absolutely certain I would not live to see Saturday- the day of the ceremony.  Hubs was working that day, picking up extra shifts at Olive Garden, and I was desperately trying to survive six more days of wedding madness.  Some people take being engaged quite well.  I, however, handled it like a mad ape.  It was too much stress, too many decisions, and too much tension.  Our engagement was a mere 11 weeks, but looking back I realize it was 11 weeks too many for this girl.

On that Sunday afternoon, steeped in stress and worries that only a six-day-away-bride can imagine, I realized I was not going to be able to get everything done at work in order to take a week off for the honeymoon.  I was a first year teacher, and blindly, stupidly, I had picked up an extra class in January- taking with it half of my preparation time.  I thought I needed the money.  Now I realize I needed my sanity more.

I was supposed to take home a big stack of papers to grade that weekend.  Friday night I realized I had forgotten the papers.  I considered making a run to the school.  (I commute 40 miles to work) But I just couldn't stand to drive 50 minutes up to my school to pick up the papers and 50 minutes back.  Not on my last weekend before the wedding.  No.  Please no.

Instead, I ran schedules in my head.  Would I be able to find time to grade those papers on top of working  40 hours, enduring my last stake president's interview, attending a bridal shower, finalizing dress adjustments, greeting out of town guests, making the music playlist, packing for the honeymoon, leaving sub plans for a week, etc, ETC, ETC, ETC?!?!?

Somehow I convinced myself on that Friday that I would be able to do it all during the upcoming week.   So dumb.  So naive.  Sunday, smack dab in the middle of church, I changed my mind.  I could see the next six days laid out before me and they were going to be absolute hell.  In a frantic fit of madness, I bailed out of church early and made an emergency phone call to the person I knew would answer.

Mary.  My little sis.

She's the bomb.  And I miss her like crazy.  She's preaching the good word down South in Argy.
Only one more year left until I see her again!
"I have to drive up to the school.  Will you come with me?"

There were no questions.  No doubts.  No "On a Sunday afternoon?  You crazy girl!"

Instead, she said, without a second of delay, "Sure.  Come pick me up."

The instant I pulled up to the house, Mary came bounding out.  She thrust open the door, snapped on that seat belt, and with an ear to ear grin exclaimed, "Let's go!"

Sometimes overly enthusiasitc people bother me.  I feel like they need to take it down a notch and come to earth where the rest of us trudge on in daily monotony.  But not that day.  That day I needed Mary's enthusiasm, her excitement, her willingness to drive two hours with me on the middle of a Sunday afternoon.

It was pouring rain outside, and as soon as we got on the road I nearly exploded to my little sister.  Every care, every worry, every stress that was hoarded up, beating up on my overworked brain came spilling out in waves.  I talked fast and I talked carelessly, and as I did tears streamed down my face.  I wasn't unhappy, I was just stressed.  And worried.  So so worried.  I was worried people would get offended at the wedding. (They did.) I was worried someone would say something ridiculous and inappropriate at the wedding. (They did.) I was worried the sound system, the technology, the video projector wouldn't work. (It didn't.)  I was worried people would be late (They were.)  My dad had died barely a year earlier.  Of all the worries, the most pressing, most porminent was the worry that it wouldn't be a happy day without him.  I was worried it would be hard for me, hard for my mom, hard for all involved. Instead of a day seeping happiness, I worried the day would be heavy with sorrow.

I drove at 80 mph, splashing water all over the freeway, speaking furiously, my worries and stress boiling out of me.  Mary just listened, uttering not a word.  Sometimes you need people not to say a dang thing back to you, and instead just nod and say "uh-uh" and "oh" and nod again.  Mary did that.

We arrived at the school in record time.  In the pouring rain we ran to the back door closest to my classroom.

Tragedy.  My card wouldn't work.  The door didn't budge.  I panicked.

We ran to the next door.  My card wouldn't work.  The door didn't budge.  The panic grew.

We ran to the next door.  And the next.  And the next.  Not one door to the school would open (I found out weeks later that they had recoded the school doors and my card had not been updated.)

I was devastated.  Past the point of tears, past the point of screams, past the point of fits of rage and stress, I turned from the last door and said quietly to Mary, "Alright, let's go."

The first five minutes of the drive, neither of us spoke.  There was a chilling silence.  Then, Mary spoke.  I suppose it was her turn to talk.  Because I was too numb to care any more and miles past my breaking point, Mary took over the reins.  She told me about her most recent horrific date, "It's not that I mind the dollar theatre and Beto's that much, it's just that he had taken me on that exact same date a week ago.  If you're going to be cheap at least be creative about it!"  And her most recent heartbreak "He had left his computer open, and I saw an email he wrote to his little brother stating that although he had kissed me, he didn't like me that much and was doing it just because he was bored."  She told me about her worries about serving a mission "What if I can't learn the language?  What if I hate my companion?  What if every cute boy gets married while I'm gone?"  Mary didn't let me get a word in edgewise, no, now it was her turn to talk.

She talked and talked and I listened and then I started to laugh and then we were both laughing and the stress that had covered every last inch of my body slowly began to melt away.  The rain didn't let up and the birds didn't come out to sing, but something was lifted from me.  A burden, a stress, a great weight.  I relished the car ride home, and when we returned to the house, my mom had dinner ready and wondered where in the world the two of us had disappeared to on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

One year later I am so grateful for a little sister and her two hours of unselfish time she gave to me.  I guess she was a savior to me that day, although she never knew.

That's what I was doing a year ago today.  How about you?

Mary was so mad when I made her pose for this picture in a dress.
But she went along with it just to humor me.
Ain't that a good little sis?

The squeaky wheel gets the grease

You know what that title means, don't you?

Whoever screams the loudest gets heard.
Whoever act the most obnoxious gets the attention.
Or, in my case, whoever complains the longest gets the problem solved.

I've always been a complainer.  I consider this a positive attribute of mine.  When I don't like the way something is, I complain and get it fixed.  None of this settling-for-less-than-the-best crap.

I mean, come on, I never would have married someone as great as Hubs if I hadn't spent years complaining about the dozens of morons that paved the way for him, would I have?

Lately I've been doing some hardcore complaining about the dishwasher in our apartment.  And by lately I mean for the best five months.  The dishwasher leaves the dishes dirtier than they were pre-loading and that is no exaggeration, my friend.  After the dishwasher finished running, dishes were covered with a sick grime and had to be scrubbed down before and after each load.  It got to the point where it was easier to just handwash our dishes.

Here's the thing with complaining, though.  You've got to direct your complaints to the right people or the whole charade is futile.  So I didn't complain to Hubs, the neighbors, or my mom.  I complained to the apartment manager.  I complained and I complained and I complained.   What do you know? Tuesday morning Hubs sent me a text saying, "We got a new dishwasher!"  Just like that.

Did you ever see a cleaner, more beautiful dishwasher?

And how about that glass?  Not a speck to be found anywhere!
That bad boy is CLEAN, I tell you!
My most recent complaint was geared toward Texas Roadhouse.  After a miserable dining experience, I decided to take out my frustration via- how did you guess?- a complaint!  It read:

To Whom it May Concern:

On December 23, I went with a group of six to eat at Texas Roadhouse.  After calling several restaurants with an hour or more of wait time, the Texas Roadhouse in Bountiful told us they only had a 25 minute wait. We put our name on over the phone and hurried over.

We waited over half an hour to be seated. At about 40 minutes I went up to ask if our names were almost up. The hostess said that we were "next" on the list, and as soon as the next party of six left we would have their table. We waited another 20 + minutes, watching SEVERAL groups of six or more be taken to their tables in the meantime. Finally after more than an hour total wait time had passed, I approached the hostess again. She looked surprised to see me and said that our name must have somehow gotten "lost" in the computer because we should have had a table by now. I stayed at the counter until she figured it out and we were taken to our table five minutes later.
Once seated, we waited over half an hour for our food and we were never talked to by our server after the original greet. She had two other big parties and was clearly given more tables than she could handle.

Another server brought out our food, which meant he essentially dropped it off and ran. There was no time to talk to him or ask him things that we needed. None of our orders were correct. Five out of the six steaks were cooked at the wrong temperature, and three out of the six had incorrect sides. When the server finally did come back to our table and we told her that we did not have the sides correct, she simply picked up the baked potato from my plate and the sweet potato from my father in laws plate and switched them. This is not the kind of service I would expect from a renowned steak house.

Our total time at Texas Roadhouse was over 2 hours and we all agreed it was one of the worst dining experiences we have ever had. I do know that nights like these are going to be busy, but hosts need to tell guests an accurate amount of time that they will be waiting. Had we known we would be waiting over an hour we certainly would have chosen another restaurant or chosen to dine in. I have long loved Texas Roadhouse; it has always been one of our favorite restaurants. Unfortunately, because of this recent experience, neither I nor any of my family members have any desire to return soon.

I sent that email on Tuesday.  Guess who was calling me up Wednesday?  You better believe it was the manager of Texas Roadhouse!  He asked me all about the situation and offered free dinner for two to make up for the unpleasant dining experience.  DINNER FOR TWO!  FREE!  I'll take it!

Moral of the story:
Complain.
It can get you far in life.

P.S.  Did I mention my complaint to United Airlines in September that got me $200 worth of free flights?  Admittedly, I was hoping for more, but sometimes you got to take what you can get.

WINNING!

This has nothing to do with anything, but have you all been watching The Bachelor?  I'm pretty sure Courtney is America's public enemy #1.  Doesn't she sound like such a brat when she says "Winning!"??  If you don't know what I'm talking about, please watch the following two minute clip and inform yourself on the evil that currently surrounds us.

Please universe, never give me a daughter like Courtney.

That being said, someone around this joint is WINNING!  The winner of our leap day giveaway is....

DRUMROLLLLLLLL.................

Anna!!!!!!!!!!!  Comment- I'm loving the earrings (especially the Rodgers' fall edition pair!) :)   I'm already following you.

Anna, it is your lucky day sweetheart!  What you need to do now is shoot an email to Wonton Mommy at alicia@wontonmommy.com and give her your email address and tell her that you were the winner of the giveaway at Life of Bon.  She will hook you up with the rest!

Pssstttt....  Secret.... Do you want to know how I chose the winner?  Hubs was making a peanut butter and honey sandwich in the kitchen and I said "You, over there with the butter knife!  Pick a number anywhere from 1-23!"

"Twelve"  he responded without batting an eye.
"You just chose the winner of the giveaway!"
"I did!"  He said with more enthusiasm then a little girl in a bouncy castle.  "I just won the giveaway?!?"

"No, no, Hubs, you just chose the winner.  So whoever left the twelvth comment is the winner..."

"Oh..." The disappointment was clear in his voice.

Obviously Hubs was not thinking straight- he surely would not be excited about winning a bunch of jewelry from Wonton Mommy, but isn't it SO cute that for just one second he was so sincerely thrilled because he thought he won the giveaway hosted by his own wife?

I hope you all have a great weekend!  How much I enjoy my weekend will depend entirely on who wins the Heat Jazz game tonight.  It is not easy being such a dedicated sports fan- NOT EASY, my friends!

George Castanza and Hubs, together at last

Did you hear?

THIS guy was in town this week.

THIS guy is GEORGE CASTANZA from SEINFELD!
GEORGE's real name is JASON ALEXANDER.  But who in their right mind would ever want to call him Jason when you can call him GEORGE CASTANZA?
GEORGE CASTANZA was teaching workshops to the theatre department at UVU.
HUBS is a theatre major at UVU.
GEORGE CASTANZA was to be workshopping HUBS.
HUBS cordially invited ME to attend his workshop with GEORGE CASTANZA.  As long as I was on good behavior and didn't embarrass him, that is.

I rushed from my school to be at the theatre by 4:00 on Tuesday.  I hustled my butt to the UVU theatre, ran to the bathroom to change my shirt because it had diet coke all over it, (but that's an entirely different story now, isn't it?) and was ready to see Hubs do his oh-so-ever-important scene in front of GEORGE CASTANZA in record time!

I was seconds away from entering the theatre when I saw an interesting sign on the door.

"Please wait until the next scene is over before you enter.  We are doing very important workshop shenanigans in here and if you have the nerve to think even for one second that you can enter mid scene, you are wrong!  You are not so important to interrupt the oh so famous GEORGE CASTANZA so don't you dare even try!"

Or something along those lines.

The normal Bonnie would have just charged into the theatre regardless, but because I love Hubs and he doesn't like it when I think I'm the exception to every rule and he definitely doesn't like it when I barge in on George Castanza mid scene, I resigned myself to defeat and sat down on a nearby chair.  (Can you handle that run on sentence?  Very few can.)  Also, I remembered I had promised good behavior, and I was quite certain that if I came bursting onto the scene (no pun intended!) and interrupted GEORGE CASTANZA Hubs would prohibit me from ever seeing a famous person again.  And we wouldn't want that now, would we?

So I sat.

After about two minutes of this chair sitting charade I was growing impatient.  What if Hubs was performing right this very moment in front of GEORGE CASTANZA and I was missing it?!?!  I decided to take matters into my own hands and have a little chat up with the usher.  "Hey!  Do you know if Greg has done his scene yet?"  I yelled across the lobby none too quietly.

"SHHHHHHH!!!!"  The usher shush shushed me.  Ushers are always doing that, you know.  It's their job so you can't get mad at them for it, you just got to accept that's the way they are.  "He's doing his scene right now."

I was crushed.  Dejected.  The usher must have seen my face fall because he approached me and mumbled something indecipherable.  "WHAT?"  I demanded.  "

"Do you want me to let you in and you can just stand in the back and watch him?" He whispered.
It is my hope that one day we will all meet a heavenly usher.  This was the day I met mine.

"I'll let you in, but you can't tell a soul that I did.  I'll get in huge trouble." (Ushers take their commitments to GEORGE CASTANZA very seriously, don't you know?)
"Oh yes, of course I understand," I replied, "I promise I shant ever tell a soul."
(Oh, please, like the INTERNET counts as people...)

I snuck in, quiet as a mouse, creeped along that wall and sat inconspicuously in an empty chair in the corner.  No one had noticed my entrance, that's how stinking furtive I was. (Fast fact: Furtive is a sophomore vocabulary word.  It means sneaky.  But it's a big word so people think you're smart.  Afterall, that is why we use big words is it not????)  I took my seat and looked up to see, literally feet away from me GEORGE CASTANZA standing on stage with HUBS.  GEORGE was telling Hubs that he was doing everything wrong, wrong, wrong.  He made Hubs do the line about a million times over and over and Hubs was getting stressed you could tell, but oh boy, he handled it like a champ!

And while we are on the topic of GEORGE CASTANZA, let me just tell you that he looks skinnier than he used to.  And he has more hair.  And he doesn't have glasses anymore.  Basically he somehow grew ten years younger in the ten years that Seinfeld has been off the air, and how he did that is a mystery to us all, I tell you, a mystery!

Naturally, I started snapping pictures right and left with my inconspicuous camera phone.  Nobody could even hear it click, and I had struck pure George Castanza picture taking gold!  After twenty minutes of this, Usher #2 approached me and said, "Please ma'am you cannot take pictures.  Don't get mad at me, I don't want you to feel bad, we just can't allow anyone to take pictures because UVU doesn't want them to end up all over the internet."  He was a very kind usher, not quite heavenly like the other one, but kind nonetheless.

I said yes, of course, I understand, I'm sorry for taking the pictures and I shall never dream of posting these pictures on the internet!
(Oh come on, this doesn't count as the internet, this is a blog! There is a difference, people!)

I told you George looks younger.  Hubs is in the brown shirt.
He doesn't look it in this picture, but he was SWEATING BULLETS!
INVISIBLE SWEATY BULLETS!

Good old GEORGE CASTANZA grilled Hubs and Hubs' partner on all their acting techniques for three quarters of an hour and finally the scrutiny was over, and let me just tell you this.

I was impressed.

And I am not impressed easily.

GEORGE CASTANZA really knew his stuff!  The man was insightful, he was smart, he was funny.  I guess you could say he is a lot like me.   If you think George Castanza is just some funny guy who cracks jokes at Kramer's expense, you have got it ALL WRONG, my friend.  He knows his playwrights like the back of his hand, he w well read on Shakespeare, and he even accurately predicted all of our futures.
Okay the last part was a lie, but you get the gist.

The guy is good.

Now... if I can just get ELAINE to teach me how to dance, my life will be complete.

Ed Part II/ Women are crazy

Remember when I wrote about Ed?  His opening line to his critical analysis essay was this:

We all know that women are crazy.

Well, today I had the pleasure of reading and grading Ed's essay in its entirety.  And let me tell you what, it was a pleasure!

Just to give you a little taste, here is one especially rich paragraph, word for word, spelling, grammar, punctuation completely in tact:  (The essay prompt was to analyze the reasons why the narrator of the story goes insane.)

Back then the men had to work and pay for everything like bills, food, Rent and clothes for him and thire wife’s if they had one.  Most women back them would be washing, cleaning “In” side their house’s with nothing else to do but that.  That’s why most women go insane like my Mom because, If you don’t take her out for the weekends she will be so grumpy for at least 3-5 week and it’s not good when shes grumpy because she makes me do so much stuff like clean her car even though it’s already clean and clean both bathrooms and so much more.  Man I feel like a women that go insane without going out with friends and all that fun stuff I like to do and that’s why most women go insane!!

And now you know why I love my job.

WARNING:
This is what will happen if you don't
"take us out for the weekends."
Grumpy conditions will last at least 3-5 weeks.

P.S.  DON'T FORGET!  YOU HAVE FIVE HOURS LEFT TO ENTER THE LEAP YEAR GIVEAWAY.  IT ENDS AT MIDNIGHT.

***Secret:  I won't actually do the drawing until tomorrow night.  If you entered the drawing during the day tomorrow (Thursday), I'd probably let it slip and throw you in the drawing anyway!***

I cannot stop touching...

...my hair!  My hair!  My hair!

Touch touch touch, all I want to do is touch my hair my hair hair hair.

It's short, it's light, it's low maintenance- everything I require from a good haircut.

I'm pretty much obsessed with it.

I just can't do long hair.  I can't.  Please don't make me ever try that again  Long hair is for people who don't wake up at 5:55.  Long hair is for people who have thick, beautiful tresses that holds a curl.  Long hair is for people with patience.

Short hair is for people who only give themselves four minutes to get ready every morning.  Short hair is for people who like to shake their strands around and whip it to and fro like a rocker.  Short hair is for ME!

Something weird about cutting your hair when you teach high school is that you have to stand there while 240 pimply pent up pubescents slowly realize that something looks different about you today.  Some of my favorite responses the past two days:

"I thought you were a substitute!"

"Why'd you go and do a thing like that?"

"Oh my gosh, I didn't even recognize you."

(said in muddled whispers to another student) "Wow.  She looks way edgy."

"You look a lot older.  You won't be able to pass for a student anymore."

"Did your husband say you could do that?"

"You look a lot younger."

Male Student:  "I like your new do."  Me:  "Thank you."  Student:  "I got a new do too."  Me: "I like it.  It looks good."  Student:  "I like yours too."  Me:  "Thank you."  Student:  "I got a new do too."

"I dig it."

"Teacher, is that you?"

"Whoa.  Has your hair always been that color?"

Student:  "Oh wow, Chase is going to freak out when he sees it."  Me:  "Why."  Student:  "Because he's a freak!"

Yes, all pictures were taken by myself while sitting at my desk at school.  Not weird at all.  Yes, I am procrastinating grading essays, thanks for always calling me out.

P.S. Sorry about the plethora of pictures of just me lately.  I promise I will stop being so narcissistic as soon as my new haircut is no longer a novelty.  When that will happen, I cannot say.
P.P.S.  Don't forget to enter the awesome giveaway!  It closes February 29/March1 at midnight!  AKA Tomorrow night!

It's a leap year giveaway!

I know what you're thinking.  I can hear those little thoughts spiraling around in your head from all the way over here.

"This blog's alright, I guess.  The font's cool and every now and then there's an interesing picture, I can dig that.  It's just that, well, this blog it'd be a heck of a lot cooler if it gave me more free stuff."

That's right. I can read minds.

And because my ability to read minds has lead me to this great insight about you wanting more free stuff out of the blog, I am announcing.......

More free stuff!

Check out this beautiful little necklace I've been sporting today.

Isn't it gorg? (That's how the Kardashians say gorgeous, I'm trying to be just like them, you know.)

Well, it's from Wonton Mommy, and let me just tell you, I'm in love!

Here's the deal with jewelry- I like jewelry that stands out and really adds to what I'm already wearing, without stealing the whole show. (That's what my face is for, isn't it?)  Therefore, this is the perfect kind of jewelry for you and me.  It's a piece we can wear to spice up a plain outfit, but it's not the type of necklace that people are going to look at and go, "Whoa!  Where'd you get that big old honkin thing?"

Because we wouldn't want that now, would we?

And now that you've got me started on how much I love my necklace, let me just tell you this.  The necklace is surprisingly light weight.  Sometimes I buy necklaces and earrings and they just weigh me down, you know?  They WEIGH ME DOWN.  But this thing is made almost entirely of FABRIC, meaning that it doesn't have that heavy, this-is-pulling-my-neck-down-and-I-want-to-die feeling that much of the jewelry has that we buy nowdays.  Half of the time that I am wearing it I do and don't even notice that it is on and isn't that the way that jewelry should be?

In addition to being gorgeous, the necklace can go with so many different outfits. Blue, yellow, white, and green?!?! Oh my! And if these colors don't suit you, Wonton Mommy has plenty more to choose from because she's awesome like that.  And if necklaces aren't your thing, by golly she's got earrings and rings too!

So here's the deal- you can win the necklace I am wearing or ANYTHING from Wonton Mommy that you want.  She is offering one lucky winner a $30 gift certificate to her shop.  That way you can have any piece of jewelry that your little heart desires.  You only have to do two simple things to be entered into the drawing to win:

1.  Be a follower of Life of Bon
2.  Check out Wonton Mommy and then leave a comment telling me which piece of jewelry you would MOST like to win.

That's it!  Easy as pie!

The giveaway ends on Wednesday, FEBRUARY 29 at 11:59 p.m.  I mean, hey, it's a leap year giveaway, it's got to end on leap yea, right?

P.S.  Here's a little secret from me to you.  If you want to order something from Wonton Mommy, shoot her an email at alicia@wontonmommy.com.  Tell her I sent you and then she'll give you 20% off of your order.  Now, ain't she a sweetheart?!?!

Why I haven't seen The Artist

Tonight was the Oscars.  For those of you who didn't watch, it was pretty much Hugo and The Artist making out like bandits while every other nominated movie watched in humiliation.

I like to think that I keep up with movies, books and pop culture, and that I am aware of what is going on in the entertainment world.  I am with it, and I am relevant, thank you very much.  That's why I felt pretty lame as I watched The Artist win best actor, best director, and best picture for 2011.  Yes, I felt lame indeed.  You see, I have not seen The Artist.

Oh, but it wasn't my fault that I didn't see The Artist.  No, no, not my fault at all.  My mom and I decided to go see it one Friday night when it finally came to Provo.  Oh, but stop.  Tragedy had struck that theatre the night we went to see The Artist.  All credit card machines were down.  No checks were accepted.  Only cash, please, at this oh-so-exclusive theatre.

Cash.
Cash.
Cash.

I don't carry cash.  Ever.  And so, with no cash, no checks, and no cards, I obviously could not pay for the movie.  Looks like it was time to mooch off mom.

My mom arrived at the theatre and I told her of our predicament.  Much to my chagrin, (and while we're on the subject, isn't chagrin the coolest word?) she was also not carrying cash. (The apple does not fall far from the tree, does it?)  We made the quick decision to go across the street to Costco to see if they would give us cash.   Their answer was "Yes, you can get cash from your card as long as you buy something."  So my mom bought weight loss drinks.  Then they said, "Oh we meant cash from your debit card, not a credit card."

My mom didn't have a debit card.
Neither did I.
We were S.O.L.
Again.

"Let's run real quick and see if we can find an ATM!" My mom suggested.  Man, that girl was determined to see the movie!  "Mom... at this point the movie started twenty minutes ago....  I think it's time to give up." I broke the news to her gently.

Discouraged, dismayed, and some other dis-word I can't think of, we threw in the towel on our quest to silent movie bliss.  Instead, we headed on over to see Hubs' production of Secret Garden and figured we'd have to catch The Artist the next weekend. (And F.Y.I. Secret Garden was every bit as good as a best picture film, I assure you!)

And because all good tragedies such as this one have to have a heartbreaking ending, I will now tell you that The Artist left town two days later.  Yes, my mom and I were officially and forever denied our desire to see French cinema at its finest.  But let the record show, we tried to see that movie.  WE TRIED.
L'extrémité
(The end in French.  Because I'm smart like that.)

Hubs' Third Wife

Hello.

Hubs' first wife was this chick:

She was naive and sweet, but pretty dumb.  She knew nothing about marriage.  NOTHING.

Then another wife came charging on in and kicked the first wife right out of the house.  A second wife.

The new wife was smart and good at paying bills.  She could also be a little naggy.

Hubs sometimes yearned for his first wife, but wifey #2 would hear none of that, no, no, she was here to stay.

But then today, unexpectedly and rashly, the second wife decided she had had enough.  She was flying the coup and nothing could make her stay.  Nothing.  This is the last known sighting of the second wife.

You can tell she was at her wits' end, can't you?

Then this happened.

And suddenly this lady showed up.

A third wife, if you will.

You can consider her the best of the two wives, sweet and angelic, but still smart AND pays the bills.  Not naggy.  Not dumb.  Can't argue with that can you?

So what do you think?  Will Hubs go running into the arms of wifey numero tres?  Or will he continue with his endless yearnings for the return of the first wife?
